Family Sponsorship

Family Sponsorship

Canada believes in family unification therefore, the main objective of the Government of Canada is the “Family re-unification” under which various spousal sponsorship programs have been introduced to bring your loved ones to Canada either temporarily or permanently. Your can sponsor your immediate family such as your child, spouse, common-law partner, your dependent, parents and grandparents and some times your relatives too to come live with you in Canada. Like other immigration programs, Family sponsorship has its own certain requirements such as meeting minimum necessary income (MNI), undertaking requirement etc.

Eligibility to sponsor a family member:

  • The sponsor must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Must be at least 18 years of old.
  • Must live in Canada, or plan to live in Canada once the application of their spouse is approved as a permanent resident.
  • Must sign in an undertaking and be able to provide the basic needs to a family member.
  • Person being sponsored must be able to undergo an immigration medical exam and should not be deemed inadmissible.
  • Must meet MNI requirements for the programs such as parents grandparents sponsorship, sponsoring a relative.

All individuals, over the age of 18 years, applying for a Canadian permanent residence must not be inadmissible to Canada and they must obtain a police clearance certificate from all the countries they have resided more than six months from the age of 18.

Note : Spouses, or the common-law partners applying under the Inland Spousal Sponsorship are eligible for an Open work permit as long they have a valid temporary status and staying at the same address as of sponsor while meeting all the other requirements.
